Rauchbock is a Smoked Amber Bock Lager brewed to honor the traditional Rauchbier (smoked beer) of Bamberg, Germany. Before the invention of smokeless kilns with indirect heat, maltsters used direct heat from wood-burning fires to dry their malt that would be used to make bier. The direct heat imparted a smokiness to the malt that is similar to the peated malt used in Scotch whisky. With advances in technology, most breweries around the world have gone smokeless. However, breweries in Bamberg in northern Bavaria continue to brew with Rauchmalz, aka smoked malt.
We brewed Rauchbock using smoked malt from IREKS in Kulmbach, Bavaria, in the traditional fashion of a Bockbier. It has a rich caramel malt character that is complemented by a complex yet subtle smokiness from the smoked malt. Try it with funky cheeses, grilled meats, or enjoy all on its own for a unique and delicious experience!
Available in the Bierhalle in 6-packs and on draft beginning Tuesday, June 6th, and in select distribution areas in KC and St. Louis.
