In June, Mike and Stephanie Butler of Kansas City, Missouri, came to Kansas City Bier Company to brew a bier: Piwo Grodziskie, a smoked wheat ale. A few months later, that bier was awarded the Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am Competition.
As winners of the Kansas City Bier Meisters Annual Homebrew Scale-Up Competition, Mike and Stephanie’s bier was chosen as the best by a panel of expert judges, and the pair were invited to come and brew a full-sized batch of their bier at the brewery. Piwo Grodziskie was released on draught at the brewery soon after, and was met with praise from
both consumers and brewery employees alike. The bier, a Polish-style smoked wheat bier, is effervescent, slightly smoked, and light on the palate, coming in under 4% ABV. Learn more about the style here.
Even entering the Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am Competition is a challenging feat in itself. According to the GABF website, “entries must be based on a homebrew recipe from American Homebrewers Association (AHA) members that have won an award in an AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition*”.
Luckily, the Butlers were no stranger to winning beer competitions, with an array of National Homebrew Competition Medals and other awards already under their belt, including a Gold and Silver medals at the National Homebrew Competition, and Midwest Homebrewer of the Year.

Winning the Gold at the GABF Pro-Am Competition was a first for both the Butlers and Kansas City Bier Company. Mike and Stephanie were present at the Awards Ceremony and accepted the award to thunderous applause. “It was really cool for us, as a brewery,” said Marketing Manager Katie Camlin, “to give talented local brewers a stage to brew bier at this level. We were so honored to be a part of their win”.
Their Piwo Grodziskie has since run out of stock in the Bierhalle, but KC Bier continues to collaborate with local homebrewers. In January, they released New Kids on the Bock, a brown Bock bier brewed with Ron Barnes of the KC Bier Meisters, winner of another Home Brew Scale-Up Competition that the brewery hosted last May. Visit KC Bier Co and keep an eye on the news, you just might see another award-winning homebrew collaboration someday!
