As the Thanksgiving season approaches, Kansas City Bier Company is partnering with local organizations and musicians to fight food waste and food insecurity in Kansas City. Through partnerships with Pete’s Garden, Harvester’s, and local band The Cover Girls, KC Bier Co is finding multiple ways to help families in need. You can help, too!
Fighting Food Waste with Pete’s Garden

Joining restaurants and venues like Arrowhead Stadium and the Loews Hotel, KC Bier Co will donate unserved, prepared food from its Waldo taproom to Pete’s Garden, who then turns the donated food into nutritious meals for families in need. These meals are distributed through social service agencies that serve families with children, including Operation Breakthrough, Boys & Girls Club, Ronald McDonald House, Jewish Family Services, Phoenix Family, Literacy KC, and Greater KC LINC.
According to Pete’s Garden, United States restaurants waste $25 billion in food each year- 30% of which was never served. In 5 years of operation, Pete’s Garden has recovered 380,000 pounds of food that would have otherwise gone to waste, and provided 317,000 meals! KC Bier Co is excited to work with Pete’s Garden to redirect food to area families in need.
Music for a Cause
In the wake of the government shutdown and looming cut of SNAP benefits, local musician Lauren Beemer reached out to KC Bier Co Marketing Manager Katie Camlin with an idea for a benefit concert. Both Lauren and Katie are members of the Kansas City Symphony Chorus, and share a love of music and connecting with the Kansas City community. “We want to do a benefit show where all donations go to SNAP/Harvesters”, said Beemer. Despite a packed events calendar, KC Bier Co was determined to make it happen.

Beemer’s group, The Cover Girls, an acoustic trio featuring three-part harmonies, are performing at the Kansas City Bier Company Bierhalle on Saturday, November 15th from 6:00-8:00PM and collecting cash and electronic donations for Harvesters, Open Arms, Reconciliation Services, and Thelma’s Kitchen. The band is forgoing a payment for the performance, and KC Bier Co is instead dividing that fee between the four aforementioned organizations. Guests who bring two non-perishable items to donate to the Harvesters Bin also get 10% off their tab during the performance (6-8PM on 11/15). View full events calendar here.

Gemütlichkeit
One of the founding principles behind Kansas City Bier Company is the German word “germütlichkeit”, which is used to convey the idea of a state or feeling of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer. “There’s nothing that quite feels as good as helping the community that has loved us and allowed us to grow”, says Marketing Manager Katie Camlin. “These events and outreach efforts really capture the spirit of gemütlichkeit- it’s about more than just beer”. ‘ At KC Bier Co, we hope you’ll visit us soon to share in the gemütlichkeit and support these fantastic causes.

Water is, arguably, the most important ingredient in brewing. In addition to making up over 90% of a bier’s volume, water plays an important part in the flavor of bier. Differences in mineral content, ions, and alkalinity can significantly affect the way a bier tastes, and bier brewers have used this to their advantage for centuries. For example, the soft (low-mineral) water of Pilsen, Czech Republic, played a large part in the invention of the Czech Pilsner, as this type of water allows subtle flavors to shine through. By contrast, hard water (high-mineral content) can help balance out the acidity of dark malts, and is often used in brewing dark, bitter biers like Irish Stouts or English Bitters.
